What are these bugs, and should I kill them?

BTW, you can both be victim and descendant. The Vikings often had descendants without wives.
This is unfortunately the usual way with conquering hordes. But in the video I posted, long-time residents of the town of Islay found that most of their DNA was actually Norwegian, and that the Vikings had settled there. There are also some arguments for Scottish migration/settlement involving both sexes in Scotland based on DNA evidence from old graves in regions that had heavy Scandinavian rule and influence for a few hundred years (i.e. Shetland) :) My point being that they weren't always about shipping off to raid and pillage for fun, sometimes (in our current terms) they were more like economic migrants fleeing super harsh conditions. Of course, some were also very, very aggressive and bloodthirsty migrants...

I have to admit, they do look a fair bit like springtails. They don't jump though; I don't know if that's an automatic disqualifier? They also (horrifyingly) look quite a bit like booklice.

Bonus info, which I'm sure will definitely help with identification: If I stare and watch them for a while, everything somehow starts to feel very itchy.

I still think that they’re globular springtails since that affinity for water puddles is very much like some species i have seen, and some either can’t jump or just don’t want to.

If you can get a better picture it would really help. Booklice definitely look like springtails, and they would live in the same environment.

They could also be something called barklice, which are in the same family.

Yeah... the problem is, I've sort-of reached the limit of what my phone can do, and it took a stupidly long time of fiddling to get the resolution that I did. I might be able to do better if I borrow my partner's phone though. I can give it a try.
