Vancouver island: bog hike. June 24th 2023

Great day!

Here are the (few) photos I took.

Some shots of the bog cranberry in bloom. Really neat flowers that seem to glow. It's interesting how they resemble Dodecatheon, and, in a way, fawn lilies. I noticed they have minuscule stem leaves too! Also in the bottom right, one flower stalk looks to have been taken over by mould.

This one was a bit of a happy accident as I couldn't get a good angle for this shot - the sun was causing problems and the Trientalis was under the deer cabbage. But then there's this charming little guy hanging out on the flower!

It was unexpected, but I was so happy to see a few Gentians in bloom! I like how the unopened buds in the first gentian have their petals packed with a twist. Also, it's interesting to note how the spots of the second gentian have a much bluer fringe on the secondary petals than the main petals.

Great shots of some very difficult plants to photograph! That little white leafhopper is so neat.

I was thinking of the socializing. You're lucky I don't live out there. I'd be over every week, asking for a ride to the bog, cadging lettuce from Carson, bugging Willy for TC advice. You'd have to move or get a restraining order.

Nephrophyllidium crista-galli. An interesting plant that's the only member of it's genus (monotypic):

Platanthera chorisiana. An orchid that is at the southern extent of it's known range here on Vancouver Island. Difficult to find. Fascinating and beautiful in a subtle way. Other than the wonderful people this plant was the highlight for me:
