Thoughts on Dormancy Without Decreased Temperature

Experimeting a bit given it’s my first winter with sarracenia. Have a few that will skip dormancy and be kept under grow lights, then a few that will be uprooted for fridge dormancy.

Was wondering if anyone has experience, or any thoughts on putting sarrs through dormancy with just a decreased photoperiod? Thought of just taking a few in, as-is and letting them overwinter in a ~15°C porch, getting only 2-3hrs of light a day and adjusting moisture levels accordingly.

15°C is pretty warm. When I had Sarrs outside, they were pretty happy to grow at fairly low temperatures. I think dormancy would be best around 1-5°C. If you really wanted flowers, you could try with higher temperatures and dark conditions and see what happens.

I see. Given the warmer temps then, would keeping them in near-total darkness help induce blooming come next spring?

I feel like this could lead to mold/fungus growth. I agree with Lloyd that 1-5 degrees celcius is the sweet spot. Lots of mine see a light freeze as well

My garage received very dim light through a window facing a neighbour's house. Bright enough to see but not enough for Sarr's to photosynthesize. I think that very dim light is Ok if the temperatures are low, say 1-5C. At 15C, I agree that mould growth would be serious, especially in low light. If you want flowers, go for fridge dormancy.

Gotcha, thanks everyone for the advice! Seems like too much of a hassle so I’ll just go with fridge dormancy for those I don’t have the space for.

Related question: was wondering if anyone that’s skipped dormancy multiple times has ever gotten their sarrs to bloom?
