Sarracenia Dormancy Questions

I'm more worried in the spring then winter. The temp swings is hard on the rhizomes
How about putting some sort of cold frame over those in pots? I have my sarracenias in pots in my little greenhouse and they have been outside for a few weeks now and they have not suffered from the frequent -2 to -4 frost.

Mild frosts seem to be Ok. It's the frosts where the soil medium gests like a rock that seem to mush the rhizome.

Finally looks decent enough to turn out my new bogs! Partial sun for the next few days to settle em onto a south facing porch, can't wait to see what they do with all that juice!
Couldn't come soon enough either, I think the farnhamii was gettin a bit leggy...

Oh, and a quick Q, they are getting some wind... nothing serious but enough to shake the pitchers. Is this ultimately beneficial like in other plants or should I shield them a bit?

You shouldn't have to worry about too much Sun at this time of year where you are. Wind should only be a problem when the pitchers get higher.

HI all

I'm in zone 5b, and usually have a month or two of freezing/thawing in the spring.
I buried the sarracenia I received last year in a raised bed, the bed is cut into a hill in my lawn. They were buried deeply, in their pots, with a light layer of leaf mulch on top.

I finally took them out yesterday (was dreading this). But all survived! Repotted so that I could check out their roots. Nice firm plants with growth points. :) Two little D. muscipula Clone Z02 also survived nicely.

Congrats! I find the mulching makes all the difference, even here where it's warmer, the winds and lack of snow fall coupled with freeze thaw cycles are hard on plants

What Sarracenia species besides Purpurea would be able to grow outside in NS all year round in the ground?

I'd avoid minor and psittacina. The others should be ok if the rhizomes are at soil level with lots of pine needles and a good snow cover.

No idea about what would winter in NS but of all the trumpet Sarracenia the three that grow at the highest elevation, furthest from the ocean, would experience colder temperatures in their native range than the others are Sarracenia oreophila, flava and some sub species of rubra

One of our most successful members when it comes to overwintering sars outdoors is Labine, who lives in Montreal. Have a look at some of his posts for info and ideas. :)

I just let mine get covered in snow each year, I'll check what varieties. They seem to do fine. I lost a jonesii one time, but mostly even they survive.
The last few years Squamsih has gontten down to some negative 20 degree weather.
My Leuco took a hit this year, and is just starting to put out new growth, but it has still survived.
I ll probably mulch for the first time this upcoming winter. I have ten or twelve varieties out there.

Where’s that green with envy emoji when you need it!

I'm in CB... my sars (all in pots) gets buried in a raised bed for overwintering. I pulled the pots out this weekend, and all survived except a mature sarracenia purpurea v. venosa. Here are the others that did survive
  • Sarracenia x catesbaei
  • Sarracenia purps
  • Sarracenia oreophila cross purp
  • Sarracenia alata 'areolate/hooded' cross S. flava var. maxima
  • Daina's Delight
  • Flava
A few VFTs planted among them survived too.

I completely forgot that you lived in Cape Breton. Sorry about that, Joanie. What do you cover the plants with?

Got around to getting the sarrs ready for dormancy. Any thoughts or suggestions regarding the current setup?

Washed off most of the peat, wrapped up to the crown in just barely moist lfsm, then put them in ziplock bags with a small opening to allow airflow. Currently in the fridge’s crisper, but will be moving em to their own mini fridge at some point.

Thanks!
