Repotting Drosera

A leggy capensis x aliciae. Some of the heads have dried up and died. Others look spindly and are slowing down. I already removed lots of dead leaves.

Gently remove the old medium from the roots. For sensitive roots like pygmies and tuberous dews, float them out with distilled water. Any roots that snap off like celery are dead and can be removed. If you're not sure, leave them. Save healthy roots even without leaves.

Get a piece of coffee filter to keep the medium in. It won't hurt the growing roots.

Take the dead leaves off if you like.

Separate growing points.

Carefully bury the root bits. Put the growing points in so the live leaves are just above the medium.

Repeat as needed, usually yearly or longer.

Great write up Lloyd and what a interesting Hybrid. I never thought of using coffee filter to keep the bits escaping the bottom holes of the pot. Another option if you have lots of it around is a small wad of dried long fibre Sphagnum moss to plug up the holes.

Talking about repotting dews

Yesterday late night I finish repotting all the baby Drosera venusta, imagine last year I sold 1 Drosera venusta at a client and she came back last week. She had many baby from mother plant, so I offered to repot 2 of the biggest plant in 2 nice pots with moss and she gave me the rest.

Look at how many I repotted lol

Some are hard to see because very tiny ones, less than a mm.

I simply use 2 toothpick for the job…while watching movie on Netflix hahaha

Hi there, I ordered a variety of seeds a year or two ago and only made one attempt to grow them and forgot to try again. I came across the packets today, filled with teeny tiny seeds of various strains.

I have a big bag of coco coir here I need to put to use, as well as a big bag of supersoil ( KIS Mix Blended Soil | Black Swallow Living Soils, Brantford ON (blackswallowsoil.com) )

Are either of these possible to grow in? I'm gonna guess the KIS mix might be too "hot" for the plant? It's made for cannabis, tomatoes, peppers, and so on.

Thanks very much for your help

for coco coir, you'll need to wash and soak it overnight, and test it with a TDS meter, make sure it's below 50. The other soil likely will have too much nutrients for carnivores

For seeds, I like using peat and perlite 1:1, or LFS and perlite 1:1 Rinse the material well with rainwater or distilled water to remove impurities. For additional protection, microwave the medium until it's too hot to touch, but don't cook it, (makes a nice clean starter). Good luck with them.

I've had good luck by boiling my water and pouring it over the media until it's totally soaked through.
