need confirmations. mealybugs

my pots are full of springtails and Stratiolaelaps scimitus plus a few millipedes I noticed. going to suck have to toss the soil mix of all my lowlands and rinse before treating with safer's soap . not going to get the predator insects until warms up and if I need after treating. those Stratiolaelaps scimitus worked wonders on the thrips as well as green lacewings.

Awesome. I miss the globular springtails I used to have in my collection. But I think all the drying out and chemicals have killed them. However, I do face fungus gnat issues, so I might have to definitely try some of these nematodes in the spring. Thanks for sharing this. :)

This is so interesting - I've had root mealies kicking around in my collection for a couple years, definitely a tough pest to eliminate, happily on my end the plants seem to handle infestation fine as long as they're kept fed and healthy. I've tried to eliminate them a few times using hot water soaks ect. with varying success (pro tip - if you have an instant pot some of them have a sous-vide setting that can hold water at the correct temperature, much easier than doing it on the stove). I'm much less involved in the hobby than I used to be so I don't mind having infested plants as I'm not selling or trading anymore. I suspect root mealies are quite common in the plant trade as I find them quite hard to detect (especially in the root ball) until the infestation is very bad.

Anyways, glad to see there are biologicals available for them - I'll definitely give some of the mites and nematodes a try come spring. I've had really tremendous success using biologicals to eliminate thrips so will be curious to see if I can knock back or eliminate the root mealies with repeated doses.

https://ladybug.ca/category/80/root-mealybugs has been very helpful with my thrip problem in the past. gave her a call, explained the plants , sent her pics of the thrips and she suggested a few mites for plant and soil as well as the green lacewings for adults. they took of the problem perfectly . there's other who sell predator insects in Canada as well, I just used her a few time and been happy . shipping can add up in in the colder weather with insulation items and some don't ship at all if you shop around. plus price point.

I found another source I might try if I still have the problem after the "Safer's insecticidal soap" treatment I just did.

https://indoorfarmer.ca/products/natural-insect-control-canna-guard-nematode-blend. it has 2 kinds and 2 doses shipping is cheaper but product cost more.

I used safer's 3 in 1 for other pest , and says it will take care of mealybugs. got it on amazon.

you can also reach out to ladybug.ca they have predator insects that will merk them.

I think others used rubbing alcohol on q-tip and rub off. not sure about that method

You should unpot your Sarr's and wash away all the media. Any obvious mealies, take off with alcohol and qtips. Then spray with something effective, roots and all. Sarr's are fairly tough and should be ok with most sprays. Quarantine and check all plants often. As soon as you can, leave them outside. The plants will be more resilient outside and natural predators may help.
