This is something that I’ve been working on recently, trying to find every 5 needle pine species in western north america.
Here are all the trees that I will be looking for:
Canadian species:
High elevation long living ancient species:
Alpine Whitebark Pine [Endangered] (Pinus albicaulis) - Found
Limber Pine (Pinus flexilis) - Found
Low elevation fast growing species:
Western White Pine (Pinus monticola) - Found
American Species:
High elevation long living ancient species:
Foxtail Pine [Near Threatened] (Pinus balfouriana) - not yet found
Rocky Mountain Bristlecone Pine (Pinus aristata) - found
Great Basin Bristlecone Pine (Pinus longaeva) - not yet found
Low elevation fast growing species:
Sugar Pine (Pinus lambertiana) - Found
South Western White Pine (Pinus strobiformis) - found
Special species (taxonomically unrelated to the rest of the 5 needle pines, seaside cliff species):
Torrey Pine (Pinus torreyana) [Critically Endangered] - Found
There are a few species in Mexico but I will not be looking for them: for now.
I will start posting pictures of the species I found so far.
