Juvenile Thrips or Springtails on Nepenthes

Tyler Hayes

Hey, just noticed these little white bugs crawling around the apical growth of my sanguinea. Seem to be hiding in the crevice between the unfurling leaf and developing one.

Would these be juvenile white thrips or just springtails? I know the answer is prob thrips but I’m praying it’s anything but that haha

One is near the base of the developing leaf and another crawling along on the bottom left

forgot to note that I’ve seen hardly any damage on the plant itself, only what I had assumed was shipping stress—these red splotches and the weird veiny texture of this one leaf.

It's really hard to see from the photo. But if you take a toothpick and poke it and it jumps away then it's most likely a springtail.

Just scuttled away, assuming that means it’s the former *~*

This Imgur link is to a vid of them moving around in a bit better quality, but looking through some of the threads here it’s seeming pretty grim given they’re only at the fresh growth, pretty narrow, and about the size of a toothpick tip.

Hm no real black splotches other than these almost microscopic ones that I presumed to be part of the leaf. Did see these three gathered around a droplet of honeydew though (tasted sweet) and scurried away when prodded. No “adult” orange/black ones though, just these smaller ones.

My other nep has had these honeydew spots show up occasionally but I’ve looked it over so many times and never found any bugs or damage besides those little pits that secrete the dew.

EDIT: Just watched Windowsill Nepenthes video on thrips, seems like these are the culprit :( thankfully the doctor doom spray is available locally. Also didn’t know about the nectar glands, most likely what the pits on my other nep is.

Last pictures do look thrippy. Although my thrips (adult?) would zoom away if i poked them.
Try the pesticide on a small bit of leaf before spraying the whole plant.

Looks like thrips to me. Check the undersides of the leaves too. Do you see any small black splotches of poop?
Tried a bit of doktor doom go green spray recc’d by paolo and seemed to dry right into the leaf after foaming up a bit. Thankful to have caught it so early—seems like it never jumped to any other plant, though I’ll keep an eye on those who share the same shelf. Thanks so much for all your advice!!
