Growing Sarracenias in Hamilton, Ontario?

Hello fellow growers of Canada and Ontario, has anyone have any experience growing Sarracenias from the southern US in Hamilton, Ontario or the Niagara Peninsula? I have recently bought hybrids of Sarracenia (S. x formosa and a S. flava x purpurea purpurea) and I am considering buying a S. minor var. okefenokeensis. I can mulch my plants since I have had success this year with mulching my Venus flytrap outdoors and these Venus flytraps are on their way to growing again now the weather is getting warmer. Would Darlingtonias and S. minor var. okefenokeensis be able to survive outdoors where I am if I mulch them?

Hey @Fishy_pow! Great to see another Hamiltonian. How's the garden progress coming along?
Hi there!
My vft from Colasanti survived this year's winter mulched outdoors and is still in the process of sending out its first shoots (vfts I was told is usually the last one to wake up during spring among deciduous carnivorous plants). I live in downtown Hamilton where is the weather is a lot warmer than say up on the escarpment especially in the winter and summer since the concrete holds and retains heat better than plain soil. The area below the escarpment of Hamilton is assigned USDA zones 6b but I feel like our winters are usually a lot warmer than that. This year it only snowed twice I believe and what snow we had was only 5-10 cm thick and melted in within a few days afterwards.
Right now I am in the process of growing my recently obtained Sarracenia flava rubricorpora x pupurpea purpurea, flava cuprea and x formosa. These seem to enjoy the heat but are currently establishing their roots in their pots.

S. minor is pushing it. Otherwise, if the plants are at ground level with a good mulch level of pine needles and snow cover, should be ok. In a bog like setup to protect against high mineral runoff. Also animal control is important.
Hey Lloyd, what do you think of S. oreophila dealing with the hot and warm continental summers of Hamilton or the Niagara Peninsula? I heard this species likes cool nights during the growing season and Hamilton is hot/humid during the peak growing season.

I have been growing Sarracenia oreophila for years mine survived without any issue what they called a “heat dome” my yard was 35+ degrees C for three days peaking at 44 degrees C. A couple weeks every summer we will get +30 days the Sarracenia love it! In fact the upright trumpet shape is supposed to have natural cooling effect as heat rises from the tube fresh air is pulled in over the rounded smooth pitcher lip (kinda looks like a jet engine cowl if you think about it) changing the air and keeping the pitcher tube slightly cooler. I can speak from experience open bog savanna’s without trees for shade get roasted!

Sarracenia oreophila also has the added bonus of being one of the hardiest cold tolerant of the upright trumpet pitchers. It’s found in the mountains away from the coast at higher elevations than most others.

Here are some pics of my first two Sarracenias I received over two weeks ago. The firsf one is a S. x formosa, and it has established itself nicely from being shipped bareroot. This one is blooming size I was told.

It has new growth after 3 weeks in my care now. Does anyone know if I can overwinter this outside mulched? I have found various claims on its hardiness.
The other one I received is my S. flava rubricorpora x purpurea purpurea. I chose this hybrid due S. purpurea purpurea's hardiness.

It too also has new growth and this was mailed to me in the same package as my S. x formosa.
In my mail I am waiting for S. oreophila var ornata, and S. x excellens (leucophylla L63 x Minor okefenokeensis “Watch Tower”) and my S. flava rubricorpora x oreophila that I all recently ordered.

Some latest additions to my Sarracenia collection! All are in the process of establishing in their respective pots due to shipping from around 2 weeks ago.
This one below is a S. oreophila var ornata "Sand Mountain".

The next one is my S. oreophila x flava rubricorpora. This one has seen better days and still recovering and establishing in its new pot. The pitchers are way bigger and taller compared to the first specimen.

The third one is my S. excellens (leucophylla x minor var okefenokeensis "Watch Tower"). This one is my opinion is doing the best so far out of all these 3 new additions I have had.
