Grow-A-Long — Ping-A-Ling

Hi Everyone – Let’s Give This a Try!

I’m a quilter, and a popular activity among quilters who can’t meet in person is a virtual "Quilt-A-Long." Participants purchase a kit with most of the materials needed for a specific quilt pattern. Then, over time (usually weekly or monthly), a specific part of the quilt is completed. Along the way, participants share questions, photos, and advice.

We’re going to try the same idea — but instead of making a quilt, we’ll be planting pings!

The first Grow-A-Long will be a Ping-A-Ling — thanks to @DaniL and @Lloyd Gordon for the catchy name!

General Outline:

  1. Research: Start by learning about pings and deciding which type you’d like to grow.
  2. Find a Container: Pick an appropriate container for your ping and share a photo of it.
  3. Gather Fun Add-Ons: Collect tiny decorative items to personalize your ping setup. Check out my post titled "The Playmobil Project" for inspiration.
  4. Source Media: Look for suitable planting media. I’ve used lava rock (sold for firepits) and pumice stones in the past. When you find media available, share the details so others can grab some too. I have a good-sized bag of unused lava rock and am happy to share.
  5. Prepare Your Media: Follow instructions for cleaning and preparing the media.
  6. Spring Shipping: Once your pings arrive (or if you already have pings), we’ll assemble them together.
  7. Group Assembly: We could host a Zoom session for everyone to build their setups together. Maybe we can even invite a Ping Celebrity to join us — hint hint nudge nudge @Muckydoo, @WillyCKH, @jeff, @Smilodonichthys, @stevebradford ... who am I missing?
  8. Photo Updates: Share progress photos over the following months.
I’ll post a detailed outline with a suggested timeline in a few days.

I am ready at sign '' GO '' ...:)
Just put my rocks' piece outdoor to get wet wet with the coming rain...

Let’s go! Thanks for getting the ball rolling!

It occurred to me that a wine pairing would be a good idea for Step 7.
Any suggestions?
Perhaps the next project could be an attempt at CP flavoured drinks, based on the CP taste testers ? https://www.carnivorousplantsociety.ca/index.php?threads/cp-taste-test.6363/page-2#post-52485

Either way, I’m in for the ping-a-ling! I have a large chunk of red lava rock I picked up a while back from a local aquarium store - Mr Pets on commercial drive, for those of you around Vancouver in need - and I’ve been meaning to plant it for many months now. I have a cheap plastic dish from the dollar store for it but might try to source a nicer glazed ceramic baking dish or container from the second-hand store.

Since my rock is big, I have a few pings to add: esseriana, Weser, Weser x emerginata, and a NOID from @spiffyzha. I’d love to add something more red and/or purple as well. I’m also wondering how an urticularia, like a gibba, might do in the water around the rock…

ETA: in my excitement I forgot to add a big thank you to @Joanie for putting this together. I am reconsidering my opinion of the value of ChatGPT now that it’s helped you organize this ;p

I find myself using ChatGBT more and more.

I'd like to participate! My planter will be micro sized for now ... only have a few Pings (2 - Emarginata x Weser, 2 - small jaumavensis x emarginata "red", and 3 - wee P. NOID all green hitchikers). My lovely P. marciano fell into a permanent hibernicula, gone but not forgotten, not sure what happened there. Seeds and perhaps some extra plants (I have a list) in spring could make the planter a tad larger. Thanks @Joanie for this fun group project! :)

Those pings are a nice bunch :-)

Been waiting for the right project for this glass cube. Same dimensions as other glass cube - 8" x 8" x 8". Larger than I was initially thinking for the ping-a-ling, but I'll consolidate a few of my smaller pots into this one.

ps - these were found at a local thrift store for $8 per.

would be a fun opportunity to explore the world of pings! speaking as a non-ping-owner :(
I think I saw that you’re in the Vancouver area, correct? I’m happy to gift you an esseriana and a larger-leafed mystery ping to get you started if you can pick up. These darn things are like succulents, they keep multiplying and I’ve run out of room! DM me if you’re interested :)
