Google Home

Yukondave

Carnivorous Plant Addict
So I got caught up in the frenzy and bought a Google Home after Christmas and after asking it to answer life enriching questions like "Hey Google, what are the rules for rock, paper, scissors, lizard, Spock?" I started looking at how I could integrate it into my automated growing environment. It was easy to link it to my Wink hub and monitor a couple of door switches and turn on/off 2 lights but I wanted more.

While hibernating this past weekend and surfing the interwebs I discovered a group of devices with the brand Sonoff. They are made in China and there appear to be several knockoffs and they are all very affordable. The interesting thing is they are essentially an Arduino with WiFi and several people have written firmware to make them more versatile. If you can load a sketch into a Arduino Pro Mini you can customize one of these.

The two I'm interested in is the POW which logs power usage of anything it controls and the TH10 which has a temperature/humidity probe. I've since found out that the standard Sonoff which is only $7 has a header for a sensor so you can add your own.

In 2-3 weeks when the devices arrive I hope to add to this thread.

That’s awesome Dave. WOuld love to know how to do something like that. Would be cool to integrate diagnostics like that. I was looking into the Apex line or HerpKeeper lines of controllers last night. But I wasn’t ready for the price investment ($250 - $800 CDN).

Using the POW unit here's a screen shot of power usage for March of my grow area including lights, mister and heating mats. Power usage is mid peak and off peak.

How did this project go? How was your experience with the firmware and setting up the sensors for your own use?
