Floral Scented Sarracenia Leaves

Agierys

Carnivore
I was trimming back some pitchers for the winter and decided to bring some cut pitchers into work to enjoy.

One of my co-workers asked if they could smell them, and I told them "sure, but they don't smell like anything" and sure enough the lid of one of the moorei hybrids (below) smelt like roses!

S. (Moorei Red x Black Widow) x Bloodmoon

Is this a common thing? Or a trait from one of the parents?

This is so weird man. Never heard of a sarr smelling like roses before. I'm so curious to find out why! and if it continues to smell next year! So strange.

Very cool! Another Sarracenia that is known to have rose scented leaf nectar is the cultivar 'Reptilian Rose'. Read here in the CPN: https://legacy.carnivorousplants.org/cpn/Species/v38n1p12_22.html

Funny story, When I first received a division of 'Reptilian Rose' I was potting up a bunch of other plants and forgot to pot it. It sat for many days and almost completely dried up. Luckily it survived and didn't end up on my long list of terribly regretful plant mistakes!

You might already know this but also keep a nose out for the raspberry-like scent of some of the S. rubra flowers.

Good to know! I'll have to smell my Rep rose next spring!
