Few Cephalotus

So far the pure perlite and sand top dressing seem to be working just fine.

These are some of the plants that were in the tower that I took apart.

They are way off to the side, not under any direct lights. I have done nothing with them so no fertilizer or anything just potted them and left them alone, other then giving them some top watering every week or so, and refilling the reservoir.

hey @Muckydoo few questions below . I divided mine month back or so and they all died back a lot. three I thought were dead but saw a bit a life to them so I bagged them all up and seem to be doing a lot better and putting out new growth . also tried a few leaf cuttings and 1 took very quickly. my soil is something like 1:2:2 / peat : perlite: coarse sand . I thought I might of watered to much at first.

questions
- did you put the lid on that tote to increase RH after division ? is that the common practice to increase RH . not sure what went wrong for me to cause the die back. was pretty extreme compared tot eh last time I didi it.
- what size sand is that ? where did you get it ?
- are you selling any of the German giants , if so how much

thanks for the help

No lid, but I kept the water level about 1/2 way up the pots until they perked up and looked good. I keep it about 1/4 way now.
You could keep a lid on or bag them, but I find they didn't love it long term, and do much better in open air. For me anyway.

It's full perlite with sand on top. It's #12 mesh sand. I found some good stuff from Home Hardware.

SEL WARWICK 22.7kg Pool Filtration Sand.

I haven't split any GG pots up, but I'll let you know when I do.

thanks for the info.

I thought the soil was to damp after the division and caused the die back. had it in stand water maybe 1/2" so when I started to see them suffer I removed the water to allow the pot to dry a bit.
after that I saw a bit of green hope from trimming the dead stuff I bagged them up for 2-4 weeks now to help them bounce back and they are putting out new growth quickly. just opened the bag a bit so I can acclimate them back to original conditions they were in before.

going to try you perlite method down the road.

any issues with that sand and other plants soil mix. sarrs , VFT , pings , dew ????

That brand is fairly new for me and I've only used it in my pings, no issues. I have a bucket of it that's been soaking for a few months, and it only reached 38 ppm, and some of that is still probably dust.

The perlite method was one @King Karnivores mentioned in a post so I just tried it out, and it seems pretty good!

I have several dozen cephs in pure perlite now and all are doing amazing! I originally got the method from PRE :) https://www.pearlriverexotics.com/blogs/news/growing-cephalotus-follicularis-in-perlite

@King Karnivores @Muckydoo

I have a couple of leaf pulling that worked out. one is size of a quarter with couple a few tiny pitcher and leaves . the others two are just starting to sprout from the pullings.

they are in LFS with plastic wrap lid .. when should I transfer them to the pure perlite pots ??

Id think as soon as they have some roots they can be transferred to perlite but tbh I dont do much leaf pullings mostly divisions and those go straight into perlite + sand top dressing

thanks for the info @Muckydoo and @King Karnivores ..

I just did division of the main plant few months ago, had a rough start to recovery but after bagging it up for a bit they bounced back .sooooo don't want to try it on them yet. the leaf cuttings were a first time thing and seemed to work out for me. figured they would be the best option to try. I will wait till they have some nice roots going before moving them.

I never adjust my light times, and I think that's one of the triggers. Everything else would be acceptable, with the nice temperature drop in the winter.

Ho ok,

For a year and a half, my lights are automatically set on the sun shine and sun set time. With less light, my ceph weren't looking good this Winter. Now that Spring is here, they're sending crowns of leave and are looking way better (my utric are looking way better too). They also got a little temperature drop, I don't know if it will be enough to get them to bloom. I hope so.

I don't know if you experience this too but almost everytime I feed my ceph, the pitcher I feed turn black. I was wondering if it could be like venus flytrap or like our trees here in Winter. In Autumn, the tree draws the sap from its leaves into the trunk and the leaves fall. If I feed a pitcher, perhaps the pitcher need to 'die' for the ceph to be able to draw the nutriments to its core?

Do you have an opinion on this ?

I feed new pitchers with tetra colour bits and they don't seem to change. Eventually the pitchers do turn brown and dry up but that takes weeks or months and doesn't seem related to feeding.
