Disclosing “seed grown” ?

Saraahh

Sprout
I recently did a butterwort order from a U.S. butterwort store, and happily one of the larger sized plants I purchased flowered! Unhappily, the flower doesn’t look anything like the listing photos online.

I reached out to inquire, figuring it was a
mistake, but they then informed me that the plants are seed grown, and that I have a “less common” variation of the plant.

What are y’all’s thoughts on selling seed grown plants? Should it be disclosed ?

I am not disputing anything with them, live and learn, just curious about others’ takes on seed grown vs leaf propped. :) personally, I only ever share leaf props so people know what they’re getting, but, I’m a huuuge flower person, not so much a foliage person for pings (Hoyas are another story lol).

Was it sold as a registered cultivar? Or did they advertise it as a species or hybrid cross?

Advertised as a cross, I don’t think they have registered cultivars :)

My struggle is that they talk about the flower in the description, and then the flower looks nothing like all the included photos or the description but I know I’m in the minority for being a flower-person :)

If they advertised as a cross, they are technically correct. However, I believe some sites state that seed grown plants will vary from a picture which can only represent one instance of the cross. The vendor may assume a buyer would be aware of this. A lesson learned. Hopefully you didn't pay a lot and you get some enjoyment out of the plant.

a picture of the flower maybe!
what name did they sell it to you under?

Oh for sure :) I’m just bummed there wasn’t a more clear disclaimer :’) silver lining, it’s already blooming after only having it for a week! :) I can’t speak to how much I paid tho

I didn’t want to reveal who the seller is they sold it as an in-house hybrid, and the flower picture they showed was a pinkish purple flower, fairly solid with subtle emarginata lines through out it. And this is what I got. Cute, but not nearly as unique. :)

I too have received plants that weren't what I was expecting. This was supposed to be the large rosetted red-leaved form of Pinguicula emarginata but looks like a hybrid to me:

This one from the same order looks exactly what I expected:

It really makes it difficult to know whether to label it as what the seller says it is or to NoID it. These are from what most people would probably consider a very reliable source.
