What does everyone do to curb mosquito larvae in their water trays? I have 24"x24" pans that I use on my greenhouse bench and only leave 1"-1/2" of rain water at a time in it, but the bloodsuckers are trying to set up shop, and our area has been a west nile hot spot before...

If you put some screening above the tray, the mosquitoes can't fly to the water to lay eggs.
 
Mosquito bits/ mosquito dunks/ BTK. you can get them at any garden center or some hardware stores. It’s a dormant bacteria that kills larvae. Also great for fruit fly and fungas gnat maggots. Dissolve in water, water plant, problem solved. In trays toss one dunk in a tray once a month and no more problems. You might even get a couple months out of one. Also works for bird baths etc and doesn’t harm anything other than soft bodies larvae.

NO! I hope that's a joke. Those trays can become very hot under the sun and the water can be really high. That would kill any fish in a day.

The mosquitos take a white to hatch, so I empty my water table once every 2 weeks, wash it and replace the water. A good way would be to put it elevated and have the water circulate with a pump. Mosquitos don't live where the water have circulation.
 
unfortunately time wont allow that for me... one day when i build a second greenhouse and have permanent benches that are the entire way 1 giant tray I plan to use a pump to circulate
 
You could use that BT mosquito control as long as the local good bugs like bees wouldn't be exposed.
 
Bt I (for mosquitoes) is not the same as BT A which is labeled for bees - wax moths or Bt K which is used for catapillers on garden plants etc. Bt K (the garden dust or spray) will work on wax moths but it is an "off label" use.

BT I ( mosquito dunks) are safe for bees.

yes, I realize I labeled it as btk up top but that was a mistake. It should have been Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti).
