I didn't throw away the cat litter but add more perlite, pumice, sand, used stratum and turface in the mix. Still in '' hit or miss '' trial period. Not a single ping dead yet !!! but the emarginata is flowering...Oil absorbent clay can be a decent substitute for cat litter and relatively inexpensive. They use to sell a brand at Canadian Tire and it was called oilsorb or something like that.
I think they just call it "certified all-purpose oil absorbent" now at Canadian Tire.
Contains a natural blend of diatomaceous earth and montmorillonite clay.
I haven't tried the new brand so I don't know if the clay goes soft after a while, but a smaller bag is only 10 bucks so it might be worth a try do a little bit of a test beforehand.

Planning to put a mix of 1 part perlite, 2 parts oil dry, peat 20% and 1 part pool filter sand for the whole pot. Cause currently i have been using 70/30 perlite/peat and on top is pumice and perlite. But not much too pumice and i think the water retention is not enough as perlite doesnt retain much water. They are doing fine but some of the other pings is shrivelling i think and the leaves are not the thick or strong see pics below. Setup was not change except for the temp 18-22 as winter is here in canada and i think there is heater direct much too it. Humidity is around 50% before it was 80%This is ok to use as part of a mineral mix.
I wouldn't use it all by itself you'd have to mix it in with other things. There are a few recipes posted on the forums here for mineral mixes that include diatomaceous earth.
