Best indoor nepenthes

PaulDavidMc

Sprout
I have four indoor nepenthes (including an Alata and a ventricosa).

I’m keen to extend my collection- my greenhouse gets too hot so I need to focus on varieties which like a sunny open indoor room.

African violets also thrive in this space as does an indoor palm, a rubber plant and a monsteria. .

Any suggestions would be most welcome!

I would stick with lowland species or hybrids of, unless you’re planning on some sort of cooled enclosure.

Lowland species like it warm and it sounds like you have plenty of that. High enough humidity would be the second concern. For me some like N. ventricosa suffer when the humidity gets low. Others I grow like N. truncata do better though I assume if the humidity was optimal even more lush.

Hybrids! Seem to be the most adaptable to less perfect environments. Like this Nepenthes (veitchii x boschiana) x northiana.

This will be counter to everyone else's advice, and is already counter to @stevebradford 's advice, so take it with a grain of salt: if you're just planning to have some nepenthes chilling on your windowsill (or maybe in the middle of the room if your windowsill is very bright?) at room temperature, I'd avoid the lowlanders. Obviously the quality of this advice will depend, among other things, on how warm you keep your rooms, but my house at least never really gets as warm as my lowland nepenthes would prefer, and I can absolutely see it in the way they all grow.

Less controversial advice: Go for hybrids! There are some absolutely gorgeous hybrids, and they tend to be more able to tolerate weird quirks of their environments.

I've seen neps in dry cleaning places and the like which I've assumed were ventrata or Miranda. Some even had seed pods!

Hi and welcome!

Based on my personal experience with non-highland species, I’ve noticed a few patterns. Some of my Nepenthes have meaty, hairy leaves, others have waxy leaves, and some have delicate, papery leaves.

The hairy ones tend to be more tolerant, while the waxy-leaved varieties require a bit more consideration. The delicate ones — they are total divas!

I've been growing a bunch of inters that meet my temp swing out in the open. my place is 75ºF day and 65-68ºF night (24ºC / 18ºC) . RH is 50 -65% , sometimes little higher . they all are putting out great pitchers. below is pic of them and list with temp notes. when I was making the list and deciding, I was using "tom's carnivores" https://tomscarnivores.com/resources/nepenthes-interactive-guide/ to check their temp requirements and averaged it out when its a multi-hybrid.
Ive had them for around 2 +/- years. price I paid reflects that.

How is your LVB x Veitchii (M) doing? I got one from nick too and mine is growing quite slow

its growing pretty well. I can't remember if I added osmocote pellets to the soil , I should repot it to find out. if I didn't add, I should soon while still small but seems to be growing at a decent rate so on the fence. lol. . im sure you got it the same size I did, golfball size , maybe smaller

Dam quite larger than mine I wonder if it’s because i’m growing it in highland conditions
Left is now. Right is when i got it

I got it July 20,2025
same as me. ya maybe take it out to room temp- inter temps - but I also like to add 4-6 osmocote pellets to the soil when small to boost growth. too I might off. can't remember. you get huge leaf jumps for first 4 months or so but small pitchers. until the pellets wear off. they are time released.

Yea my temps is 25 day/70% humidity and 15 nights/80%humidity currently. Maybe it was fertilizer difference too. I only started brushing it with maxsea recently since nick told me that’s what he does after i bought a veitchii off him. Ive never tried osmocote pellets in the growing media only inside pitchers do you usually do it with your small specimens? My other highland seedlings/small plants basically outpaced this one. Interesting enough with my light setup I seem to get smaller leaves but larger pitchers

I find root fertilization to be really key to fast growth with Neps. I have an lvb x veitchii from PE that I got in summer 2024 at about 3" across and it's about 12" across now. Every plant can be different though and I find some just take a while to kick in to gear. I have other plants I got at the same time that were about the same size and are only now starting to really leaf jump in the last 6 months or so. My temps are about the same as yours, maybe a tad warmer both day and night. I use sea grow (maxsea) or Schultz orchid fert (15-5-5) at about 100-150 ppm every 4 to 6 weeks to the roots and I'll also periodically give the pitchers the same or some cichlid fish pellets.

20:10 for vid info about pellets in soil

the vids above talks about it. pic is an older post I made based on what he said about using osmocote . so for my inter's I find temp swing helps them grow faster. your highland will be to cold during day. I use toms carnivores for all my temp requirements.

for my lowland and sarrs based on the two links I shared I started to use the pellets for the soil to speed up leaf growth. and did it every boost them. after the 4 months it wears off and then I fertilize the pitchers with a number of things. food , pellets or maxsea. also keep in mind im sooooo lazzzzzzy now and for the past year or so with feeding and they all are doing very well just from the lights I got off amazon. barrina and sans grow light. I believe 40W at different heights .

I’ll try out the osmocote in the soil for this specimin. I was honestly hesitant cause there wasn’t too many posts about this method and I didn’t want to just randomly kill off the plant. I’ve only been foliar spraying my plants with maxsea, maxsea inside the pitchers, osmocote inside and brushing small nepenthes leafs with maxsea. Guess one more thing to try

Sorry about the derail but I would recommend briggsana (lowii x Ventracosa), veitchiis, and (veitchii x lowii) x (burbidgeae x edwardsiana) BE-3980. I attached some pics of mine below of those
