Plant of the Month, April 2025

    Sarracenia 'Waccamaw'

    Alpine azalea (Kalmia procumbens)

After 8 years from when I first started these cuttings it has finally flowered well! 2 years ago I got 2 flowers. Last year nothing. This is a very slow growing alpine sub-shrub and known to be difficult in cultivation.
  3. Smilodonichthys

    Labelling temperate pinguicula grandiflora.

Are you sure P.ramosa produces gemmae? I have read it does not. If I remember right it's close relative P.variegata does though so I might be wrong.

    Coconut's Pings

It shows there that they are synonymous with good species and no longer accepted. They have something to do with grandiflora in that they were published as subspecies of grandiflora before they were found to be species in their own right. Getting back to my original point of labeling, POWO and...
  5. Smilodonichthys

    Labelling temperate pinguicula grandiflora.

Don't forget about our North American ones that do too. Namely P. macroceras and P. vulgaris.

    Temperate Pinguicula

Pinguicula grandiflora (same plants that I was recently selling if anyone's wondering what they look like) and Pinguicula longifolia subsp. longifolia {red plants, Valle de Pineta}. I recently planted a Saxifraga and some Soldanella in the tufa above the longifolia. Near where they grow in...

    Coconut's Pings

All 4 taxa of grandiflora you mention in your other reply are on there as well as others that are not currently accepted and their synonyms. They even list a link to the authority they rely on and other links to sources for more info eg. first publication. If you feel anything is unrepresented...

    Coconut's Pings

They do pretty good. I have google scholar alerts for many taxa I'm interested in and POWO and IPNI seem to keep up well enough. P.tlahuica was published less than a year ago. Be the change you want to see in the world and let them know. They are interested in hearing about papers they have...

    Coconut's Pings

For P. ibarrae that works. For others not so much. P. grandiflora is just a follow-up of P. vulgaris var. grandiflora ;). And yes, if I had a grandiflora originally collected in 1789 I'd keep it labeled that way if that's how I received it or at least have that on the tag :D. I should also...
  10. Smilodonichthys

    Labelling temperate pinguicula grandiflora.

I suggest you not change the label based on someones guess about a plant that just shows leaves. The plants I sent you are likely subsp. grandiflora but someone else might guess Pinguicula grandiflora subsp. coenocantabrica and then we'd have a real mess to hash out. The label is vague on...
  11. Smilodonichthys

    Coconut's Pings

I write who I got it from on the label too. That doesn't help if who you got it from received the plant from someone who changed the label. In my opinion one should reproduce the label as written and write another label with your interpretation that wouldn't be passed on to others. I too have...

    Grow-A-Long — Ping-A-Ling

Or ingredients you do want ;)

    Coconut's Pings

Thanks for the info Jeff. Though neither coconut nor I were confused. I sent Pinguicula grandiflora, Pinguicula ibarrae and Drosera rotundifolia. All of them labelled. I know this already about P.ibarrae. The label is not my opinion. Pinguicula ibarrae =spec. agnata Tlanchinol, Mex. is what it...

Sarracenia purpurea ssp purpurea Peggy's Cove...

I have a bunch of seedlings from seed collected in the Peggy's/Polly cove area that I'll post photos of once they have mature pictures. I'll be keeping most of these and bagging and hand pollinating them when they flower. I will try and remember to keep you in mind when I get seed. I haven't...

    Coconut's Pings

Yes and D. rotundifolia are neither pings nor Mexican ;)

    Coconut's Pings

You're welcome. I thought it'd be nice to send along a bonus ping you might not have. I appreciate all your great ping posts these past few years.

    Disa Lillian Rose

Grown in pure live Sphagnum (Well, some still living at least).
  18. Smilodonichthys

    Grow-A-Long — Ping-A-Ling

Cha cha cha chia! I'm sure it'd work.:D
  19. Smilodonichthys

    Grafting Cacti

I just got a couple new interesting cacti from a friend. Escobaria sneedii var. leei which clumps and Opuntia fragilis 'Tiny Michigan' which is a dwarf Opuntia. I'll share some with you when I get some spare pads Lloyd if you don't already grow them.
  20. Smilodonichthys

    Grow-A-Long — Ping-A-Ling

Could work. Always worth experimenting. The lack of green algae surprises me too. Hypertufa/tufa grows moss and algae almost too well when wet. Some people hate that.
