this is not my idea all though we did try it a long time back some 20 years back i recon ,didn't go well then may be didn't know enough as i do now ? any how looks like it working ok now , i have 2 different set ups here 1 very large tub 55 Lt and a smaller tub about 20 Lt with perlite only and a bit of sphag on top to keep some moisture in ,that will cover the top at some stage , the smaller tub was put together early this year April or round there , the larger tub is 3 months or more old , there is a few things that needs to be done but not hard to do at all , and yes i do see some helies in there and a cober lilly to just to see what happens

ok you have to water every day at least 1 lt of rain water over the plants min , i recycle the water in to a bucket from the drain hole i have in the tubs , it holds about 2 to 3 Lts of water in the bottom more in the big tub , the humidity i have is about 60 % or so , some plants may take a bit to recover the smaller tub did , the large tub no died back at all , make sure the perlite is very well washed off all the white water from the perlite dust is cleaned off / out before using , wash thoroughly very important

Nice experiment but I think it could be hazardous in our weather conditions.

I would be afraid that the plants and perlite would be washed out after a heavy rainfall.

Still, I'm looking forward to see the long term results.

I believe this pure perlite setup would be only good for indoors, often I see people use a lid on top as well.
