I bought a crazy thing.

My son and I put together a Geiger counter kit a few years ago. The tube detects beta particles and gamma radiation. For some reason, I wanted to be able to detect alpha particles. So after thinking about it for months, I bought this guy. There was a much cheaper one on eBay but it was from the Ukraine and they won't let you send any money to the Ukraine. This one was evidently made to do experiments in space.

I could buy an alpha particle emitter but I'm going to see how active my Betafite sample is. (No obvious alpha activity.)

Too cool! I remember back to science class where the teacher had a geiger counter and had the kids bring in gold jewelry then robbed us all! Just kidding haha we tested it with the Geiger counter and half of the gold was fairly radioactive! Apparently the U.S used a lot of gold in the early days of nuclear testing for shielding instruments. When they were done with it the gold was sold back into the market. Apparently the level I can’t remember was in some high enough to give people a rash sometimes making some people think they were allergic to gold!

Got the Geiger tube a few weeks ago. Luckily it had the original documentation as it needed an extra resistor. It's much more sensitive. Now I need an alpha particle source. Anybody have an old smoke alarm (the radioactive kind)?

The smoke detector Americium-241shows a lot of activity on the new Geiger tube (at the mica window) and much less at the side from the minor gamma Ray activity. The alpha particles are stopped by a piece of paper or plastic.
